Psalm 82 is a song of hope that reminds us that God is the ultimate judge who will bring justice to the oppressed. The psalmist challenges the judges of the earth to judge fairly and to recognize that they are accountable to God.
1{A Psalm of Asaph.} God standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods.
2How long will ye judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah.
3Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.
4Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.
5They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course.
6I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.
7But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.
8Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations.
Commentary
This psalm challenges us to re-examine our understanding of justice and power. God is the ultimate authority, and He charges the leaders of this earth to use their power fairly and to protect the weak and marginalized. The psalm invites us to remember that we are all accountable to God, whether we are leaders or not. Psalm 82 is a call to action for those of us who seek justice and to those who have the ability to make a difference. May we be inspired to use our power for good and to seek justice for all.
