The tribe of Dan, in search of land, takes the city of Laish and renames it Dan.
Bible version
פַּרשָׁנוּת
Judges chapter 18 is a narrative of the Danites’ search for a new home. The Danites had been unable to conquer their allotted portion of the Promised Land, so they sent out five men to scout out a new place to settle. The men eventually came to the city of Laish, which was inhabited by a people who were “quiet and unsuspecting” and “lived in security” (Judges 18:7). The Danites saw this as an opportunity to take the city for themselves, and they did so without any resistance. The Danites then proceeded to build a temple and an altar to the Lord, and they appointed a priest from the tribe of Levi to serve in the temple. This was a significant event, as it marked the first time that the Danites had established a place of worship for the Lord. This was a sign of their commitment to the Lord and their desire to serve Him. The narrative of Judges chapter 18 serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience to the Lord. The Danites were willing to leave their allotted portion of the Promised Land and seek out a new home in order to serve the Lord. This is an example of faithfulness and obedience that we should all strive to emulate.
