The Genealogy of Boaz and Ruth
Commentary
Ruth chapter 4 is a pivotal chapter in the book of Ruth. It is here that the story of Ruth and Boaz reaches its climax. In this chapter, Boaz is revealed to be a kinsman-redeemer of Ruth and her mother-in-law Naomi. Boaz is willing to redeem Ruth and take her as his wife, thus providing a secure future for her and Naomi. The chapter begins with Boaz going to the city gate to meet with the other potential kinsman-redeemer. Boaz is willing to give up his right to redeem Ruth in order to ensure that she is taken care of. The other man is willing to redeem Ruth, but only if he can also acquire the land that belonged to her deceased husband. Boaz is unwilling to let this happen, and so he offers to redeem Ruth himself. The chapter then moves to the town square, where Boaz and the other man make their agreement in front of the elders of the town. Boaz is willing to pay the full price for Ruth and the land, and the other man agrees to relinquish his right to redeem Ruth. Boaz then takes Ruth as his wife, and the chapter ends with the townspeople blessing them and wishing them a long and happy life together. Ruth chapter 4 is a powerful reminder of the importance of family and community. Boaz is willing to sacrifice his own rights in order to ensure that Ruth and Naomi are taken care of. The townspeople also show their support for Ruth and Boaz by blessing them and wishing them a long and happy life together. This chapter is a beautiful example of how God can use people to provide for those in need.
