Commentary

Ruth chapter 1 is a beautiful story of loyalty and faithfulness. It begins with a family of Elimelech, Naomi, and their two sons, Mahlon and Chilion, who leave their home in Bethlehem due to a famine. They travel to Moab, where the sons marry Moabite women, Orpah and Ruth. Tragically, Elimelech and the two sons die, leaving Naomi and her two daughters-in-law alone. Naomi decides to return to Bethlehem and urges her daughters-in-law to return to their families. Orpah reluctantly agrees, but Ruth refuses, declaring her loyalty to Naomi and her people. Ruth's faithfulness is a beautiful example of loyalty and devotion, and her words, "Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God," are some of the most famous words in the Bible. This chapter is a powerful reminder of the importance of loyalty and faithfulness, and of the power of love and devotion.
