Praise and Warfare

1 Praise ye the LORD. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints.
2 Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.
3 Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.
4 For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.
5 Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.
6 Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a twoedged sword in their hand;
7 To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people;
8 To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron;
9 To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the LORD.

Commentary

The psalm begins with a call to praise the Lord, Who has created and saved His people. The psalmist instructs the people to sing a new song, to dance and to make music to the Lord. This emphasis on joyful worship emphasizes the importance of corporate and expressive worship in the life of believers.However, the psalm does not end with mere praise, as it goes on to encourage spiritual warfare. The call to "execute vengeance upon the nations" and "punish the peoples" refers to a spiritual battle against the forces of darkness that are opposed to God. The psalmist declares that the Lord is with His people in this spiritual battle, and He will grant them victory over their enemies.Psalm 149 reminds us that as believers, we are called to both worship and warfare. Our worship should be joyful, expressive and focused on God's goodness and faithfulness. However, we must also realize that we are engaged in a spiritual battle against the enemy, which requires us to remain vigilant and actively participate in God's victory over evil.
