Psalm 114 celebrates God's intervention in the exodus of Israel from Egypt, as well as His power over creation. It highlights the movement of the sea and the Jordan River, the trembling of the earth, and the removal of obstacles by God's hand.
1When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language;
2Judah was his sanctuary, and Israel his dominion.
3The sea saw it, and fled: Jordan was driven back.
4The mountains skipped like rams, and the little hills like lambs.
5What ailed thee, O thou sea, that thou fleddest? thou Jordan, that thou wast driven back?
6Ye mountains, that ye skipped like rams; and ye little hills, like lambs?
7Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob;
8Which turned the rock into a standing water, the flint into a fountain of waters.
Commentary
Psalm 114 reminds us of how God's power and presence can transform impossible situations, evidenced by the miraculous deliverance of Israel from slavery in Egypt. It also speaks to how creation itself can respond to the presence of God, as seen in the parting of the Red Sea and the Jordan River. As we face our own challenges and obstacles, we can find hope and strength in the same God who brought His people out of Egypt. This psalm reminds us that God is still able to move mountains, divide seas, and make a way where there seems to be no way.
