Numbers 13
Bible version
Commentary
In Numbers 13, Moses sends twelve spies to scout out the land of Canaan, the Promised Land that God has promised to the Israelites. The spies return with a report of the land, which is described as a land flowing with milk and honey. However, ten of the spies also report that the inhabitants of the land are powerful and that the Israelites will not be able to conquer them. This causes the people to become discouraged and fearful, and they begin to grumble against Moses and God. God is angry with the people for their lack of faith and tells Moses that none of the people who grumbled will be allowed to enter the Promised Land. Only Caleb and Joshua, two of the spies who had faith in God, will be allowed to enter. This serves as a reminder to the Israelites that faith in God is essential if they are to receive the blessings that He has promised them. It also serves as a warning to the people that they must trust in God and not be swayed by the opinions of others.
