Commentary

Matthew 2 is a chapter that focuses on the birth of Jesus and the events that followed. It begins with the wise men from the East coming to Jerusalem to ask where the newborn king of the Jews was. King Herod was troubled by this news and asked the chief priests and scribes to tell him where the Messiah was to be born. They told him Bethlehem, as it was prophesied in the Old Testament. Herod then sent the wise men to Bethlehem to find the child and bring him back to him. The wise men found Jesus and his family in a house, not a stable, and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. After they left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and warned him to flee to Egypt to escape Herod's wrath. Joseph and Mary took Jesus and fled to Egypt, where they stayed until Herod died. When Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream again and told him to return to Israel. Joseph and Mary returned to Israel and settled in Nazareth. This fulfilled the prophecy that Jesus would be called a Nazarene. Matthew 2 is an important chapter in the Bible because it tells the story of Jesus' birth and the events that followed. It also shows how God was protecting Jesus from the evil plans of Herod. This chapter is a reminder that God is always watching over us and protecting us from harm.
