Meet the heroes of Luke

Commentary

Luke 15 is a chapter that speaks to the heart of God's love for sinners. Jesus tells three parables that illustrate the joy of God when a sinner repents and returns to Him. The first parable is the parable of the lost sheep. Jesus explains that just as a shepherd will leave the ninety-nine sheep in the wilderness to search for the one lost sheep, so too will God leave the ninety-nine righteous to search for the one sinner who has gone astray. The second parable is the parable of the lost coin. Jesus explains that just as a woman will search diligently for a lost coin, so too will God search diligently for the lost sinner. The third parable is the parable of the prodigal son. Jesus explains that just as a father will welcome home his son who has gone astray, so too will God welcome home the sinner who has repented and returned to Him. These parables illustrate the great love and mercy of God for sinners. He is willing to leave the ninety-nine righteous to search for the one sinner who has gone astray. He is willing to search diligently for the lost sinner. He is willing to welcome home the sinner who has repented and returned to Him. This is the heart of God's love for sinners. He is willing to forgive and restore those who have gone astray. He is willing to show mercy and grace to those who have sinned. This is the message of Luke 15.
