Jonah Preaches to Nineveh
Commentary
In Jonah chapter 3, we see the prophet Jonah finally obeying God's command to go to Nineveh and preach against its wickedness. After his initial refusal to go, Jonah is now obedient and willing to do as God has asked. He goes to Nineveh and proclaims a message of repentance and warning of destruction if the people do not turn from their wicked ways. The people of Nineveh respond to Jonah's message with great humility and repentance. They put on sackcloth and ashes, fast, and cry out to God for mercy. This is a remarkable response, as Nineveh was a great and powerful city. The king himself humbles himself before God and orders the people to repent and turn from their wickedness. This chapter serves as a reminder of the power of God's word and the importance of obedience. Jonah's obedience to God's command is rewarded with the repentance of the people of Nineveh. It also serves as a reminder of God's mercy and grace, as He is willing to forgive even the most wicked of people if they turn to Him in repentance.
