Commentary

This chapter highlights the continued turmoil and devastation faced by Judah after the Babylonian conquest. Despite being given a chance at stability and leadership under Gedaliah, the people are once again thrown into chaos with his assassination. It also shows the ongoing tensions between those who remained in Judah and those who fled to Egypt. The violent retaliation by Johanan is seen as necessary for justice, but it ultimately leads to further conflict and bloodshed.
