Commentary

Genesis chapter 49 is a prophetic blessing given by Jacob to his twelve sons. Jacob is nearing the end of his life and is preparing to pass on his legacy to his sons. He begins by blessing Reuben, his eldest son, but then goes on to bless each of his sons in turn. He speaks of their strengths and weaknesses, and of the future of their descendants. Jacob's blessing of Judah is particularly noteworthy. He speaks of Judah's strength and courage, and of his descendants ruling over their enemies. He also speaks of the coming of the Messiah, who will be of the tribe of Judah. This prophecy is fulfilled in the New Testament, when Jesus is born of the line of David, a descendant of Judah. Jacob's blessing of his sons is a reminder of the importance of passing on a legacy to future generations. It is also a reminder of the power of God's promises, as Jacob's prophecy of the coming of the Messiah is fulfilled centuries later.
