Commentary

Exodus 32 is a pivotal chapter in the book of Exodus, as it marks a major turning point in the relationship between God and the Israelites. After the Israelites had been freed from slavery in Egypt, they had been given the Ten Commandments by God, and were now on their way to the Promised Land. However, while Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments, the Israelites had become impatient and had fashioned a golden calf to worship. In response to this, God was angry and wanted to destroy the Israelites, but Moses interceded on their behalf. He reminded God of His promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and asked Him to forgive the Israelites. God relented, but He still punished the Israelites for their idolatry. He sent a plague among them, and then commanded Moses to lead the Israelites away from Mount Sinai. The chapter ends with Moses breaking the tablets of the Ten Commandments, symbolizing the broken relationship between God and the Israelites. This chapter serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience and idolatry, and of the importance of faithfulness to God. It also serves as a reminder of God's mercy and grace, as He chose to forgive the Israelites despite their disobedience.
