The Third Missionary Journey of Paul
Commentary
Acts 16 is a chapter that focuses on the missionary journeys of Paul and Silas. It begins with Paul and Silas traveling to Derbe and Lystra, two cities in the region of Galatia. In Lystra, they meet a man named Timothy, who is a believer in Jesus. Paul and Silas take Timothy with them on their journey and they continue to preach the gospel in the region. The chapter then moves to Philippi, a city in Macedonia. Here, Paul and Silas encounter a slave girl who is possessed by a spirit of divination. Paul casts out the spirit and the slave girl's owners are angry and have Paul and Silas arrested. While in prison, Paul and Silas pray and sing hymns and an earthquake shakes the prison, freeing them from their chains. The jailer is so amazed by this that he and his family come to faith in Jesus. The chapter ends with Paul and Silas leaving Philippi and continuing on their missionary journey. This chapter is a great example of how God can use even the most difficult circumstances to bring people to faith in Him. It also shows us the importance of prayer and worship in times of difficulty.
