Commentary
1 Chronicles 10 is the final chapter of the book of 1 Chronicles, and it recounts the death of King Saul and his sons in battle. The chapter begins with a brief description of the battle between the Philistines and the Israelites, in which the Philistines were victorious. Saul and his sons were killed in the battle, and the Philistines took possession of the Israelite kingdom. The chapter then goes on to describe the mourning of the Israelites for Saul and his sons. The people of Jabesh-gilead, who had been loyal to Saul, retrieved the bodies of Saul and his sons and buried them in Jabesh. The people of Jabesh-gilead also mourned for Saul and his sons for seven days. The chapter then goes on to describe the succession of David as king of Israel. David was anointed king by the people of Judah, and he was accepted by the other tribes of Israel. David then went to Hebron and was anointed king of all Israel. The chapter ends with a brief description of David's reign as king of Israel. He was successful in his battles against the Philistines and other enemies of Israel, and he reigned for forty years. 1 Chronicles 10 is an important chapter in the Bible, as it marks the end of Saul's reign and the beginning of David's reign as king of Israel. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of mourning for those who have died, and of the importance of loyalty to one's king.
