James, son of Alphaeus, is also known as James the Less and James the Just. He was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and is believed to be the author of the Epistle of James in the New Testament. He is believed to have been a fisherman and lived in Jerusalem. He is considered to be the first bishop of Jerusalem and is venerated as a saint by the Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and Eastern Orthodox Churches. There is little information available about his life, but tradition holds that he was crucified and buried in Jerusalem.
